We had our yearly district meeting of General Managers. Every year, corporate gives a theme for the meeting. The theme for the year was "There's no such thing as work/life balance, so enjoy the job you do". That's what finally broke the barrier in my brain that company loyalty doesn't mean a thing if they are just going to work you to death. For context, this is a national retail chain.

Walking the f out was, and is, the right decision. Gotta humble these dumb corporate boot-licking - they love to lord over your head how easily they could change the trajectory of your life for the worse; the least you can do is return the courtesy.

To them, this sounds great and uplifting; "we're the BEST, because we don't care about all that wussy stuff like workers rights! We're dedicated to the customer only!" But they only think that because they don't pay any price and get all the glory. They can't comprehend why it

doesn't fire up the workers the same way to know the company will soar and they (c suits) can take credit and get money in bonuses and compensation, because they literally can't fathom how other people feel due to being sociopaths. They can only see inside their own minds.

Shootchyaski OP.2d ago • The next day I started looking for a new job. It took me a few months to find a new one, but I stopped trying to climb that corporate ladder and focused on finding a job that respected the fact that I am a father of two *edited for clarity

Shootchyaski OP • 2d ago • It's a tough balance to find, between cost of life and wanting to be present for the people around you. You gotta prioritize your well being, and your family's (if you currently have one). A job won't ever give you back all the firsts you miss. I learned that the hard way.

TenaciousVillain 1d ago. Unless you are extremely talented and making top dollar, avoid retail. And if you must work retail to make ends meet, make it a stepping stone. Get out as soon as you can. Retail whether it is grocery, fast food, etc. is soul crushing, thankless work. Don't let anyone convince you otherwise. Get out.
